Test 2: Naming Ionic Compounds Flashcards
When writing an ionic compounds name or formula, what do we name first?
the cation then the anion
What are the three different types of cations?
main group cations, polyatomic ions, and transition metal cations
For main group elements the name of the cation is
the name of the element which makes the cation
For polyatomic ions the name of the cation is
the name of the polyatomic ion listed in your chart
In the IUPAC, rules for transition metal cations require that the name of the metal is followed
by a (roman numeral) which indicates it’s charge ie. Co2+ is cobalt(II)
The classical (Latin) naming rules give each different transition metal ion its own
name ie. Fe2+ is ferrous
The science community uses the ___ naming method and the medical field uses the ___ method.
modern (IUPAC), classic (Latin)
How do we name main group ions?
- Name the element the cation comes from
- Name the element the anion comes from, with an -ide suffix.
How do we name polyatomic ions?
Memorize the polyatomic ion name
How do we name traditional metal ions?
Name the element the cation comes from, and add the ion charge as roman numerals in parentheses
How do we name classical transition metal ions?
Use the defined names of transition metal ions
Zinc is always assumed to be __, so you do not need to write it’s roman numeral
2+
Silver is always assumed to be __, so you do not need to write it’s roman numeral
