BD DX Mania Criteria
A. Elevated or Irritable mood for at least 1 week.
Changes in activity and energy
B. 3+ sxs (4 if mood in A is only irritable)
C. Impairment or psychotic features
D. Exclusion
Criteria B SX (7)
- Grandiosity or Inflated self-esteem
- Decreased need for sleep
- More talkative than usual or Pressure to keep talking
- Flight of ideas or Experience that thoughts are racing
- Distractibility
- Increase in goal-directed activity or Psychomotor agitation
- Impulsivity

Excessive involvement in pleasurable activities that have a high potential for painful consequences
BD DX MDE
Criteria A:
1. Dysphoric mood
2. Anhedonia
3. Weight +/- or appetite change
4. Insomnia/Hypersomnia
5. Psychomotor agitation/retardation
6. Fatigue/Loss of energy
7. Feelings of worthlessness/guilt
8. Dismished ability to think/concentrate or indecisiveness
9. Suicidal thoughts/behaviors
Criteria B: Impairment/Distress
Criteria C: Exclusion
BD and the Law
Does not satisfy both criteria of M’N rule (only 1st, rarely 2nd). If psychosis is present = M’N applies

Teacher who had sexual relations with her student, a 14 yrs old boy.
-Excuse used “I was manic, when women are manic they are hypersexual”
-> M’N: 1- Disease of mind: Bipolar disorder
2- Right/wrong: Knew sex w/ minor was wrong

- Begin with a manic episode
- More likely to act their mania
Women:
- Begin with a depressive episode
