Test 2 Axilla/Special Spaces Flashcards
Base of Axilla
Concave skin, subcutaneous tissue, and axillary fascia extending from the arm to the thoracic wall forming the axillary fossa(armpit)
Apex of axilla
Cervico-axillary canal, passageway b/w the neck and axilla. Bounded by the first rib clavicle and superior edge of the scapula
Anterior wall of axilla
Pectoralis major and minor and the pectoral and clavipectoral fascia associated with them.
The anterior axillary fold is the most inferior part of the anterior wall
Posterior wall of axilla
Scapula and subscapularis on anterior suface
Teres major and latissimus doris on inferior surface
Posterior axillary fold is most inferior part that may be grasped
Medial wall of axilla
Thoracic wall and overlying serratus anterior
Lateral wall of axilla
Intertubercle sulcus of humerus
Axilla
Pyramidal space inferior to the glenohumeral joint and superior to the skin and axillary fascia at the junction of the arm and thorax
Borders of Quadrangular Space
Above: Teres Minor
Below: Teres Major
Medially: Long head triceps brachii
Laterally: Surgical neck of humerus
Contents of Axilla
Axillary Artery and its branches
Axillary Vein and its tributaries
Nerves of cords and branches of brachial plexus
Lymphatic vessels
Several groups of axillary lymph nodes, all embedded in axillary fat
Proximally, neurovasculaar structures are ensheathed in a sleeve-like extension of cervical prevertebral fascia, the axillary sheath
