An exerciser who goes to the gym because she feels like being overweight reflects poorly on her character

Activity is personally important and directed toward a valued outcome - behavior is viewed as part of ones self

A runner who runs in terrible weather because runner is part of who they are

- an expectation of being perceived as incompetent could result in not trying hard
