Terrestrial biomes Flashcards
Tundra
Cold, waterless, and treeless, low nutrient level in soil
Permafrost
Soil that is frozen for the whole year
Boreal forest/Taiga
Cold and rains a little, low nutrient level in soil
Temperate Rainforest
Moderate temperatures and a lot of rain, low nutrient level in soil
Temperate seasonal forest/temperate deciduous forest
Has 4 defined seasons, deciduous trees, moderate rain, and a moderate nutrient level in soil
Shrubland/Woodland
Hot and dry summers and rainy and mild winters. Low nutrient content
Temperate grassland/cold desert/praries
Cold, harsh winters and hot, dry summers. Has 4 seasons, not a lot of plants, and a lot of wildfires. Precipitation varies, results in either tallgrass praries, shortgrass praries, or cold deserts
Tropical rainforest
Has the most diversity. Is warm and gets a lot of rain. Low nutrient level but a lot of decomposition
Tropical seasonal forest/savanna/tropical deciduous forest
Warm temperatures with less rain because it is near the international tropical convergence zone. Has high nutrient concentrations cause it doesnt rain a lot and it is warm. Has zebras
Subtropical desert
Hot and dry (30 degree line, Hadley cell). Sparse vegetation
