Terms Lab 24 (complete) Flashcards
orbit
Cavity in the skull that contains the eyeball and associated structures
periorbita
Connective tissue sheath that surronds the eye and its muscles
lacrimal gland
Lies in the periorbita; located on the lateral aspect of the bulbus oculi
superficial gland of the third eyelid
Not seen in gross anatomy
levator palpebrae superioris muscle
Most dorsal “strap” muscle of the eye muscles
rectus muscles (dorsal, ventral, medial, and lateral)
Four flat “strap” muscles; insert closest to the sclera
retractor bulbi muscle
Single muscle with four separate bellies; located between the rectus muscles; smaller and more proximal to the optic nerve
ventral oblique muscle
Muscle that wraps ventrally from the lateral aspect of the bulbus oculi; runs obliquely
dorsal oblique muscle
Muscle that runs obliquely from the medial aspect of the bulbus oculi to a trochlea and caudally along the optic nerve
trochlea (orbit)
Located on the medial aspect of the bulbus oculi
bulbus oculi
“eyeball”
external fibrous coat (eye)
Includes:
1) cornea (anterior
(2) sclera (posterior)
cornea
Transparent external fibrous coat on the anterior aspect of the eye
sclera
Opaque white external fibrous coat on the posterior aspect of the eye
middle vascular coat (eye)
Includes:
(1) choroid
(2) ciliary body
(3) iris
iris
Anterior portion of the middle vascular coat; Circular smooth muscle that forms the outline of the pupil
pupil
Central opening of the iris
choroid
Posterior portion of the middle vascular coat; pigmented layer attached to the sclera
tapetum lucidum
Layer deep to the pigmented choroid; reflective surface that is very close to the retina; only in the very posterior part of the eye
ciliary body
Posterior to the iris; attached to the lens with suspensory ligaments
lens
(obvious)
anterior chamber (eye)
Space between the cornea and the iris
posterior chamber (eye)
Space between the iris and the lens
aqueous humor
Substance that fills the anterior and posterior chambers (cornea to iris to lens)
vitreous chamber
Space posterior to the lens
vitreous body
Substance that fills vitreous chamber (posterior to the lens)
internal coat (eye)
Includes:
(1) retina
(2) blood vessels
(3) nerves
retina
Deepest layer; located only in the posterior conpartment
optic disc
Location where the retinal axons exit the sclera as the optic nerve
fundus
Portion of the retina that is visible when viewed through the pupil
external jugular vein
Largest superficial vein that travels cranially from the neck
linguofacial vein
First ventral branch from the external jugular vein
lingual vein
Ventral branch from the linguofacial vein
facial vein
Dorsal branch from the linguofacial vein
maxillary vein
First dorsal branch from the external jugular vein
