Terms Lab 23 (complete) Flashcards
epiglottic cartliage
First cartilage of the larynx
thyroid cartilage
Second cartilage of the larynx; large “shield” shape; can be reflected to see small muscles of the larynx
cricoid cartilage
Fourth and last cartilage of the larynx; next to the trachea; attachment point for several small muscles
cricothyroid ligament
Tiny ligament located on the ventral side
arytenoid cartilage
Third cartilage of the larynx; rino shape
vocal process
Caudalventral projection on the arytenoid cartilage; attachment point for a ligament
laryngeal ventricle
NOT in cat; evagination in the mucosa inside the larynx
glottis
Includes the vocal fold/ridge and the vocal process of the arytenoid cartilage
vocal fold
DOG only; attachment between the vocal process of the arytenoid cartilage and thyroid cartilage
vocal ridge
Cat only; analogous to the dog’s vocal fold
cricothyroid muscle
Small muscle located on the lateroventral aspect of the cricoid cartilage; can be seen without the removal of thyroid cartilage
cricoarytenoideus dorsalis muscle
Large muscle located on the dorsal aspect of the cricoid cartilage; can be seen without the removal of thyroid cartilage
cricoarytenoideus lateralis muscle
Small muscle located on the lateral aspect of the cricoid cartilage; can only be seen after the removal of the thyroid cartilage
thyroarytenoideus muscle
Large muscle located on the lateral side of the arytenoid cartilage; larger ventrally and smaller dorsally; can only be seen with the removal of the thyroid cartilage
vocalis muscle
Small muscle deep to the thyroarytenoideus muscle
auricle
External ear
pinna
External ear
auricular cartilage
External ear cartilage
marginal cutaneous sac
Small fold of skin that forms a pocket on the caudolateral border
annular cartilage
Cartilage that unites the auricular cartilage and the boney external acustic meatus
temporalis muscle
Large flat muscle that covers temporal bone
masseter muscle
Large round muscle located on the “cheek”
medial & lateral pterygoid muscle
Muscles with thick aponerosis located deep to the ramus of the mandible
digastricus muscle
Longitudinal muscle located on the caudoventral mandible; partly deep to the masseter muscle
zygomatic salivary gland
Deep to the rostral part of the zygomatic arch; superficial to the pterygoid muscles
styloglossus muscle
Extrinsic tongue muscle; located just ventral to the root of the tongue
hyoglossus muscle
Extrinsic tongue muscle; located ventral to the styloglossus muscle near the root of the
genioglossus muscle
Extrinsic tongue muscle; large longitudinal muscle that runs ventral to the body of the tongue
sternohyoideus
Large “strap” muscle that runs along the ventral aspect of the neck
thyrohyoideus
Smaller “strap” muscle that runs along the ventrolateral aspect of the neck; travels rostrally from the hyoid bones; superficial to the larynx
mylohyoideus
Muscle that lies ventral to the digastricus muscle; ventral to the caudal mandible; triangle-shaped
geniohyoideus
Large longitudinal muscle that follows the arch of the tongue; located ventral to the tongue and the genioglossus muscle
