Terminology Flashcards
Anesthesia
2
- loss of sensation
2. sleep-like state
Sedation
Drug-induced CNS depression and drowsiness
Tranquilization
Drug-induced state of calm in which the patient is reluctant to move and is aware of but is unconcerned with its surroundings
- doesn’t really make them sleepy
- relieves anxiety
General Anesthesia
Reversible state of unconsciousness, immobility, muscle relaxation, and loss of sensation throughout the body produced by administration of anesthetic agents
Surgical Anesthesia
Stage of general anesthesia in which there is sufficient analgesia and muscle relaxation to allow surgery to be performed without patient pain or movement
Local Anesthesia
Loss of sensation in a small area of the body produced by administration of a local anesthetic agent in proximity to the location or area of interest
Balanced Anesthesia
The concurrent use of multiple anesthetic agents in small quantities to minimize their negative effect
Why is Balanced Anesthesia ideal?
3
- Easier to regulate and control
- Safer for animal
- Lower doses of each agent
