Stages of General Anesthesia Flashcards
What does Stage 1 of anesthesia do to the body?
3
- Primary Analgesia and Disorientation
- sensory cortex depression
- Amnesia (after this stage)
When does Stage 1 end?
when the animal loses consciousness
What does Stage 2 of anesthesia do to the body?
3
- loss of consciousness
- delirium and lack of inhibition
- motor cortex depression
What is Stage 2 also known as?
the excitatory stage
What is motor cortex depression?
when the animal doesn’t have control over their motor function (voluntary movements)
When does Stage 2 occur during anesthesia?
- when an animal is administered anesthetic agents
2. when an animal is recovering from anesthesia
You are less likely to see Stage 2 if you do what?
administer preanesthetic drugs
When does Stage 2 end?
when the animal finally relaxes into anesthesia
What does Stage 3 of anesthesia do to the body?
3
- unconsciousness
- progressive depression of respiration, circulation, reflexes, and muscle tone
- spinal cord depression
What is Stage 3 made up of?
4 planes of surgical anesthesia
What is Plane 1 of Stage 3?
2
- light surgical anesthesia
- animal will still react to pain
What is Plane 2 of Stage 3?
3
- moderate surgical anesthesia
- animal doesn’t feel or react to pain
- used for most surgical procedures
What is Pane 3 of Stage 3?
4
- deep surgical anesthesia
- eye surgery
- bone surgery
- not very safe for the CV or RR systems
What is Plane 4 of Stage 3?
4
- most dangerous plane
- very deep anesthesia
- really depressed CV, RR
- difficulty breathing
What does Stage 4 of anesthesia do to the body?
2
- cessation of respiratory followed by cardiac arrest
2. anesthetic overdose
