Ownership
A large organisation that has interests spanning across a number of different businesses or industries.
Vertical Intergration
A process whereby one company acquires another involved at a different level of the industry.
The media institution will operate under seperate subsidaries and production is passed down a chain of command.
Horizontal Intergration
A media company’s ownership of several businesses of the same value.
A media company can own film production companies, record labels, television studios etc…
Diversification
The process of a company enlarging or varying its range of products or field of operation.
Global Production
A film production that is globally appealing.
Will have a genuine fan base in multiple countries across the globe.
e.g. £6.4 mill in france and distributed to canada, japan, brazil etc…
Distribution
Distribution can be described as the link between the producer and the audience.
It refers to all strategies used in the release, marketing and promotion of a film.
e.g. grassroot or viral marketing
Circulation
Refers to the number of copies of any given product, in this case film, which are put into distribution.
Uploads, screenings, DVDs, Blu-Ray, Streamings, Film Festivals etc…
e.g. screened in 273 cinemas
Digital Convergence
The process through which different media industries merge with one another or move close together.
This is mainly facilitated by digital technologies.
e.g. viral marketing
Regulation
The act of controlling, directing and managing an activity.
Usually, the ruling is controlled by a higher authority.
e.g. 15 certificate by BBFC due to language, and heavy emotional themes
Viral Marketing
A method of marketing whereby consumers are encouraged to share information about a product or service.
e.g. viral #WeAreAllDanielBlake on twitter and social media
Synergy
The interaction or cooperation of two or more organisations who work together to increase their revenue respectfully.
e.g. eOne’s partnership with Daily Mirror to run a campaign
Economic Events
New generation of console or gaming technology is released resulting in a huge incline in profit and market share e.g. the release of Assassins Creed
PEGI
Pan European Game Information, the regulation system for video games e.g. Assassins Creed Valhalla was rated a PEGI 18
MMORPG
Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game experience, where audiences can connect and compete in online forums - promotes a more interactive gaming experience
Persistent Worlds
Worlds that are unique to the franchise, where game developers create iconic cities that can be explore - adding realism e.g. Assassins Creed Valhalla
Hand-Held Devices
Offers existing fans familiar experience but through a hand-held device, more accessible e.g.
Tabloid
Half the page size of an ordinary newspaper, contains news in condensed form with a lot of photographs. They focus on sensationalism and stories that promote gossip e.g. The Daily Mirror
Broadsheet
Printed on large sheets of paper and are generally considered to be more serious and complex than tabloids. They focus on issues, events and avoid gossip e.g. The Times
Sensationalism
A type of editorial tactic, where events and stories are tactically selected and worded to excite the greatest number of viewers and readers. Encourages biased and emotionally loaded impressions of events, with a lack of neutrality and a potential for manipulation to a story e.g. The Daily Mirror
Public Service Broadcaster
Broadcasting made, financed and controlled by the public and for the public. Neither commercial or state-owned and free from political interference. Citizens are informed, educated and also entertained e.g. The BBC
Digital Audio Broadcasting
New system for broadcasting and receiving radio stations where signals are broadcast in a digital format to enable high production values.
