Who are the San and Khoi?
The San were hunter-gatherers who lived in Southern Africa for thousands of years. The Khoi were herders who kept animals like sheep and cattle. Together, they are known as the Khoisan.
Remember ‘Khoisan’: San = Hunters, Khoi = Herders.
What did the San people eat?
The San ate wild animals they hunted, like springbok and antelope. They also gathered plants, berries, roots, and nuts.
Think of the San as nature experts: ‘Animals + Plants’.
How did the Khoi people live?
The Khoi were herders who kept animals like cattle, sheep, and goats for milk and meat. They lived in huts made from reeds and animal skins.
Khoi = ‘K’ for keeping animals (Cattle, Sheep, Goats).
How did the San hunt animals?
The San used bows and arrows with poisoned tips to hunt. They tracked animals carefully, using their knowledge of the land.

What kinds of tools did the San use?
The San used stone tools for hunting and gathering, such as sharp stones for cutting and sticks to dig for roots.
San = ‘S’ for Stone tools (sharp stones and sticks).
What kind of homes did the Khoi live in?
The Khoi lived in round huts made from sticks, grass, and animal skins. These huts were easy to move when they traveled with their animals.
Khoi homes are ‘Round and Ready to Move’.
What is special about the San’s language?
The San’s language has ‘click’ sounds that make it unique and different from other languages.
San language = Clicks, like a tongue’s ‘snap’.
How did the San and Khoi show their culture?
The San painted pictures on rocks that showed their daily lives and beliefs. The Khoi had dances, songs, and stories about their animals and life.

What are rock paintings, and why are they important?
Rock paintings are pictures made by the San on rocks and caves. They show us what life was like long ago and what the San believed in.

What challenges did the San and Khoi face when new people arrived?
When new people, like European settlers, arrived, the San and Khoi lost their land and animals. Many were forced to work for settlers or move to other areas.
