Temporal fossa Flashcards
boundaries : 1. above
temporal line of frontal and parietal bone
boundaries : 2. below
upper border of zygomatic bone
boundaries : 3. floor
‘H’-shaped suture where the 4 bones meet (pterion)
tmj type
synovial joint
tmj articular surface
condylar proceess of mandible and mandibular fossa of temporal bone
tmj ligament
lateral temporomandibular / sphenomandibular/
stylomandibular ligaments
tmj nerve supply
Auriculotemporal and mesenteric branch of mandibular
nerve
tmj clinical signnificance
- lat. TM lig prevents posterior dislocation of the mandible so as not to
fracture the tympanic plate when a severe blow falls on the chin. - If the disc is partially detached from the capsule, its movements
become noisy and produce audible click during movement of the joint
muscle of mastication
masseter, temporalis, medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid
masseter muscle origin
zygomatic arch and maxillary process of zygomatic bone
masseter muscle insertion
Lateral surface of ramus of
mandible
contents of temporal fossa
- temporalis muscle
- temporal fascia
- zygomaticotemporal branch of maxillar nerve
- deep temporal artery- branch of maxillary artery
- deep temporal nerve - branch of mandibular nerve
- middle temporal artery - superficial temporal artery
boundaries of infratemporal fossa roof
inferior surface of of greater wing of sphenoid and temporal bone. it also contains foramen spinosum.
boundaries of infratemporal fossa lateral wall
medial surface of ramus of mandible
boundaries of infratemporal fossa medial wall
anteriorly-lateral plate of pterygoid process and more posteriorly by pharynx and muscle of soft palate
contents of infratemporal fossa
- Sphenomandibular ligament.
- Medial & lateral pterygoid muscle.
- Mandibular nerve
- Maxillary artery.
- Branches of facial nerve.
- glossopharyngeal nerve
- Pterygoid plexus.
Branches of Mandibular nerve
Mandibular nerve enters the infratemporal
fossa via foramen ovale & gives 2 branches
before dividing into ant & post trunk
2 branches of Mandibular nerve
Meningeal nerve & nerve to medial pterygoid.
Anterior trunk branches:
Sensory : buccal
Motor : masseteric , deep temporal, nerve to lateral pterygoid
Posterior trunk branches:
sensory : auriculotemporal nerve, lingual nerve, inferior alveolar nerve
motor : nerve to mylohyoid (branch of inferior alveolar nerve)
NErve supply of parotid gland
sensory : auriculotemporal nerve
preganglionic parasympathetic fibers to otic ganglion come from : glossopharyngeal nerve
mandibular division of trigerminal nerve
mandibular nerve leaves the skull through foramen ovale.
mandibular division, of trigerminal nerve. motor fibres innervate
- muscle of mastication including
- temporalis,
- masseter,
- medial & lateral pterygoid,
- tensor tympani,
- tensor veli palatini,
- anterior belly of digastric &
- mylohyoid muscle.
Mandibular nerve also receives
sensory branches from
- skin of lower face,
- cheek,
- lower lip,
- ear,
- external acoustic meatus & temporal region, anterior 2/3 of tongue,
- teeth of lower jaw,
- mastoid air cells,
- mucous membrane of cheek,
- mandible, and
- dura in middle cranial fossa.
