Temporal Fossa Flashcards
What is the relationship of middle cranial fossa, temporal fossa, and infratemporal fossa?
MTF is medial and within cranium; TF is lateral and sits above zygomatic arch; IFT sits wedged between zygomatic arch, mandible, and inferior temporal bone
What are the opposing and shared functions of lateral and medial pterygoid muscles?
LP protrudes the jaw while MP retracts the jaw; both function in side-to-side movements of the jaw
Describe the course of the maxillary artery after branching from ECA
enters IFT: mandibular(deep to mandible) and pterygoid (runs with muscle and dives between heads) component; third part runs in pterygopalatine fossa
The middle meningeal artery is a branch of what artery?
maxillary artery, 1st part aka mandibular
Maxillary artery travels between what nerves?
two branches of the auriculotemporal nerve
Where does the inferior alveolar artery emerge from the mandible and what is it then called?
mental foramen; called mental artery
What is the venous drainage of infratemporal fossa?
pterygoid plexus
