Telehealth/Diabetes Flashcards
homeostasis
The maintenance of stable conditions in the body, which enables the optimal functioning
telehealth
a way for individuals to remotely access health-related services using technology, rather than in-person
hormone
causes an effect on cell activity
Insulin
-protein
-hormone secreted by the pancreas
-needed for the metabolism of carbohydrates
-regulates of glucose levels in the blood.
glucagon
-hormone secreted by pancreatic endocrine cells
-raises blood glucose levels
glycogen
made up of many connected glucose molecules
Negative feedback
Goes back to normal ex. shivering
Positive Feedback
Change in hormones ex. pregnancy/labor
Type 1 Diabetes
-develops during childhood
-lack of insulin
-leads to high blood glucose levels.
Type 2 Diabetes
-caused by bad habits and diets
-known by high blood glucose caused by impaired insulin
-too much insulin
Biomolecule
A large molecule, or macromolecule, produced by living organisms.
Examples of biomolecules
nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids
Difference between macromolecules and biomolecules
They are the same thing
Hyperglycemia
High blood glucose level
hypoglycemia
Low blood glucose level
