Intra-plate processes
FAULTS: smaller magnitude EQ’s where ancient faults are located
COLLISION: plates can crumple and crack
HOT SPOTS: occur where there is upwelling
Why are EQ’s are distributed globally?
Because in any plate movement direction or tension forces can build up and release.
•tsunamis=less sparsely than EQ’s. they require a boundary both destructive and only with big enough magnitude
Plate boundaries
DESTRUCTIVE= most intense EQ’s occur here
TRANSFORM=conservativ plate boundaries create large EQ’s due to stress buildup —> San Andreas
CONSTRUCTIVE=friction generated is far lower than at boundaries, EQ magnitude reflects this
Geophysical + Hydro meteorological effects
Pyroclastic flow + monsoon rainfall = lahars
•Ash/Tephra + monsoon rains = collapse roofs
•High winds + any event = difficult search and rescue
Hazard management cycle
1- short term + emergency responses
2- medium term response following assessment of damage
3- long term reconstruction of infrastructure
4- prevention measure considers including land use planning
5- preparing for a future event through risk assessment + planning
