Technology and Innovation in Pharmacy (Community Pharmacy Snap Shot) Flashcards
What is electronic transfer of prescriptions? (ETP)? How it it related to prescription exchange service (PES)? What are names of two PES systems?
- Safe and secure transfer of prescription info between a prescriber (doc, specialist, dentist, optomoterist, nurse practitioner) and a community pharmacy using an electronic system known as a Prescription Exhange Service (PES)
> eRc Script Exchange and MediSecure –> each PES has been approved by the commonwealth and is required to meet specific standards relating to security and privacy
For electronic transfer of prescriptions, what happens after GP Prescribes Medication & prints prescription with a barcode…
- At the same time the prescription information is sent to a prescription exchange service (PES)
- The patient takes the prescription to the pharmacy of their choice
- If the pharmacy is using ETP, the pharmacist scans the barcode and this will download the prescription & patient information safely and securely
- The pharmacists completes the dispensing process and provides the medication to the patient –> data to My Health Record –> online PBS claim –> barcode scanning –> dispensing robots
- Patient visits their GP and a decision is made to prescribe medication
What are the benefits of ETP?
- Ensures medicines information can be accurately and securely shared
- Risk of prescription transcription errors is reduced
- Significant time and workflow efficiencies improvements for pharmacies, therefore more time can be directed to patient counselling or other health outcomes-centred activities
Explain PES interoperability
- important part of making ETP work is to ensure all electronic prescription barcodes can be read regardless of the dispensing system or ETP provider the pharmacy uses
- this means that all electronic prescription barcodes from ETP enabled pharmacies will allow the scanning of the prescription details and thus be interoperable
Explain ETP active/enabled
- Once pharmacy registered with a PES, pharmacy should ensure all pharmacist and assistants scan the barcodes on all available electronic prescriptions including originals or repeats
- Registering and using a PES is an important pre-requisite for sending dispense information to my health record (MHR) system
What is the online claiming process for PBS?
- Pharmacy receives PBS scheme or repatriation pharmaceutical benefits scheme prescription
- details of prescription are entered into the prescription dispensing software (PDS)
- PDS system send the information to department of human services
- Department checks the details of the prescription comply with PBS/RPBS requirements and check patient entitlement status directly through centrelink
- Department of human services indicates whether PBS claim on item is payable
- system allows for correction of any errors or omissions
- Pharmacy can supply medication to patient
- At end of pharmacys claim period, the claim will be closed via the PBS
- All prescriptions and claim-related paper work must be kept by the pharmacy for 2 years for audits and verifications
Pharmacist should refer to and follow the guidance regarding use of scanners contained in?
- PSA professional practice standard 5 dispensing
- Society of hopsital phamracists
- Pharmaceutical defence limited (PDL) and australian journal of pharmacy’s (AJP) guide to good dispensing
When should barcodes be scanned
- on prescriptions and repeat authorisation forms where available for eHealth processing
- on products where barcodes exist
- on the dispensing label in cirumstances where a barcode is printed
Advantages of barcode scanning?
How do dispensing robots work?
Robotic arm selects a product from a defined shelf position and delivers it to the pharmacist or technician for labelling
Explain the following advtantages of dispensing robots
A) speed
B) safety
C) patient care
D) security
A)
- faster service
B)
- similar emdication names or packaging can easily be confused or incorrectly selected by pharmacy staff
C)
- allowing robots to be delivered to forward dispensing station sets where pharmacist dispenses a patient prescription in front of them –> allows phamracists to talk to patients about their medications, address possible interactions and answer questions to improve the quality of a patients life
- pharmacist may also be able to devote more time to provide basic preventive care, administering immunisation and performing health screening
D)
- Medications securely locked in automated dispensing machine
- All dispensed medication tracked by machine software
- Only certian pharmacy staff are trained on how to use open and restock machines, reducing potential of medication theft or human error
When can problems occur with dispensing robots?
Problems can still arise with robots if the software or robot breaks down or special trained staff are not available
> mistakes can also still occur if prescription information is incorrectly entered
What is teleahealth? What are the approaches and examples?
Video conferencing to deliver health care services where doctor and patient are physically separated
What can doctor provide on telehealth? How much will they charge for a 15 minute consult?
Provide diagnosis, treatment plans, prescriptions, medical certificates and specialist referrals
- 50-69 dollars for a 15 minute consult
Does medicare provide rebate for telehealth?
only to a limited nmber of patients who live in certain remote locations and if only seeing a specialist
