Technology Flashcards
Components of big data
Volume: the ability to store massive amounts of data
Velocity: the ability to refresh data rapidly
Variety: Importing, storing, and integrating data in different formats
How Big Data can help HR
Collecting new data
Using data more efficiently
Better strategic analysis
Information System Component: Presentation Tier
What it looks like for user
User interface with the system.
It should incorporate a level of security and adaptable to users with different physical abilities (sight/hearing/movement)
Information System Component: Logic Tier
Enables operation
composed of system software and application software that enable operations.
System software: operating system, which runs the interface with the presentation tier (or user), moves data back and forth between the data tier and software, manages communication with hardware components (e.g., video cards, displays, printers), and controls system resources.
Application software: offers specific functionality (e.g., project management software that includes budgeting and scheduling tools); it must be customized to communicate with the system software.
Information System Component: Data Tier
stores the information that will be used by the application tier to respond to user queries.
Data can be stored on local drives, removable devices, and servers. The servers may be on-premises or remote, accessed over special private lines or over the Internet/cloud
Information System Component: Communications Tier
enables sharing of data and applications by networking a computer (or mobile device) with other computers or servers
Scalability
How to increase the amount of data stored without increasing processing time and how to manage capacity.
Software as a service (SaaS)
software that is owned, delivered, and managed remotely by one or more providers. The software is delivered over the Internet, rather than installed on a computer, to contracted customers at any time, on a pay-for-use basis or as a subscription based on use metrics.
MSS portal
Provide managers with access to current data on their employees and budgets
Allow them to perform for themselves transactions that previously required HR’s implementation.
ERP systems
Allow different parts of an org to access the same data
applications are designed for a generalized user and may not serve unique situations or satisfy user preferences
HRIS
Specific technology that supports HR functions (component of an ERP system)
Best of breed systems
HR tech products designed to serve unique situations or satisfy specific preferences
May not communicate with an organization’s database successfully
BYOD
Allow employees to use their personal devices to access organization’s network, but define certain restrictions on their use
