Technology Flashcards
video motion analysis
technique used to get information about moving objects from video
notional match analysis-used to record aspects of the team or individual performance, studies movement patterns, strategies and tactics- gathers objective data
biomechanics- used to analyse the sporting impact of body movements, involves quantitative based study and analysis
sometimes called kinematics- study of motion of bodies with respect to time, displacement, velocity and speed of movement
performance analysis
provision of objective feedback to performers trying to effect a positive change in performance
- failure to use it may result in poor immediate decisions being made
- can be used to improve a team/ indi performance but also to look at the tactics of the opponent
metabolic cart
a device used to measure the body’s metabolism by measuring the amount of heat produced when a person is at rest
-calirometry can tell medics about a person’s overall health
indirect calirometry
uses MC and measures how much the person breathes in a certain amount of time
- co2 and o2 volumes and concs are recorded and translated into heat equivalent
- provides measurement of resting energy - resting energy expenditure (REE)
IC strengths
can help individuals to
- calc energy expenditure which allows determination of nutritional requirements
- be classified as obese
IC weaknesses
- inaccuracies from air leaks + from measurement/ recording errors
- difficulty using on children
- changing diet wrongly, based on results
GPS software
space based navigation system that provides location and time info
can track speed, distance and direction of individual
-can be used to measure fatigue so can advise coaches when to make substitutions
-can be used to manage workload for injured players
GPS strengths
improves tactical analysis
helps coaches compare player’s performances and potentially pick the best player for the team
makes better use of training time as info is produced very quickly
monitoring data integrity
-maintaining and ensuring the accuracy and consistency of stored data over its lifetime
-to ensure data is entered and recorded exactly as intended
can be comprimised
-human errors, software bug, hardware malfunctions
minimise threats
-regularly back up data, take care when entering data, use error detection and correction software
functions of sport analytics
- monitors fitness for performance eg distance travelled and speed to ensure the right players are chosen for games using heart rate monitors/ GPS
- can help idenitify strength of teams and individuals which can affect team selection/ training sessions
- game analysis
- analysis of opponents can tell teams what tactics to use. formations to use
- skill and technique development by recording previous and technique and showing where to change
- injury prevention eg by vibration therapy or electrostimlation
- talent ID/scouting to get a lot more quantitative and qualitative data about potential individuals than just watching them at a trial
sports analytics negatives
(for coach)
- may be too much info and cause overload
- coaches may not understand what all the info means
- too much reliance on data and not about what the coach is able to do
impact of technology on sport
- increases participation, more inclusive due to the development of carbon fibre prosthetics and specialised wheelchairs
- improved quality of surfaces it is played on
- data may be misleading as the differences in performance may be due to coach using different tactics/formation
- can be expensive so teams with less money will be at a disadvantage which is unfair
- money may be better spent on increasing participation/ tackling inactivity
impact of technology on performer
- improved equipment can aid skill/ technique development eg better footballs
- improved recovery from training eg compression clothing
- better rehab techniques
- detailed analysis of performance by GPS can help improve performance
- improved knowledge of diet and nutrition to help improve performance
- drug testing is more efficient
- poorer countries or teams are at a disadvantage if they can’t afford equip
- drug testing doesn’t always keep up with new drugs so players may take drugs as masking agents are better
- technology isn’t always accurate and can be damaging if the team rely on it
impact of sports technology on coach
- detailed analysis of performance so can make assessments of players tactically and physiologically
- easier to pick teams
- can make focused training programmes to improve weaknesses
-may be over emphasis on data and not on coaching methods
impact on audience
- ensures right decisions are made by officials so they are less frustrated
- increased experience at home through uses of different camera angles
- improved camera technology eg Hawkeye may increase excitement
- breaks in play may be disruptive and take too long
- costs limit the use of technology at events so may be different from game to game
