Attribution Theory Flashcards
attribution
different ways in which athletes view their success/failure
weiners model of attribution
internal stable= ability external stable= task difficulty internal unstable= effort external unstable= luck locus of causaility locus of satbility
learned helplessness
belief that you will fail in a situation and your actions cannot change the outcome of the event
develops when performer attributes failure internally and stable (ability)
low self confidence
strategies to avoid learned helplessness
change negative attributions to positive ones by attribution retraining
coach should set realistic goals
highlight previous successful performances
alter performer’s perception of why they failed- change to external factors
locus of stability
stable- reason is relatively permanent eg ability and task difficulty
unstable- can change from week to week or even within minutes during a game- effort changes when you are winning or losing and luck is very changeable
locus of causality
internal- winning or losing is in the performer’s control
external- out of the performer’s control and under the control of the environment
