amateurism
playing for the love of the game; receiving no financial gain
19th century code/ideal of sporting ethics
still evident now:
-fair play/sportsmanship is positively encouraged and promoted
-sports eg rugby maintain amateurism as they have lots of respect for referee and call him sir
olympic oath
pledge read by one athlete on behalf of their nation that involves a set of ideals they swear to uphold
sportsmanship and fair play are in evidence now
however lots of doping and positive drug tests leave the relevence of the olympic oath in question
win at all costs attitude is often seen in the olympics
sportsmanship
competing in a fair manner with respect to others
eg shaking hands
encouraged by:
-use of ngb campaigns promoting fair play + sportsmanship
-use of technology to help match officials reach correct decisions
-punishing foul play eg sinbin or sending off
gamesmanship
bending the rules in order to gain an advantage, failing to follow etiquette of the game
eg
-time wasting
-trying to deceive officials by over appealing for your corner/throw or diving and overreacting to a challenge
-pretending its a head injury
win ethic
a drive to outperform other competitors and a win at all costs attitude
eg
-negative media for losing teams
-managers are fired very quickly if they are not successful
-high amounts of deviance (doping)
positive deviance
behaviour which is outside the norms of society but has no intent to break the rules
performer carrying on even though they are injured
negative deviance
behaviour that goes against the norms and has a detrimental effect on other individuals
taking performance enhancing drugs
deliberately fouling an opponent
