Textiles developed for specific functions rather than apearance

Agrotextiles
Used to improve agricultural production
Often biodegradable and offer solar / uv protection
Shading, thermal insulating, netting , weed suppression

Reduces the need for killing weeds or pesticides
Can be cheap
C- can alter the natural ecosystems by changing the cycle of water / carbon

Construction textiles
Developed to improve construction appearance / longevity
E.gs structures - waterproof membrane, concrete reinforcement
- during construction - hoarding nets, tarpaulins canopies

Strong, light, resistant to degradation chemicals, sunlight and acid
Stable in different heat conditions

May be expensive / hard to source
May degrade over time

Geotextiles
Used in civil engineering where soil, rock or other geotechnical material needs to be stabilized / filtered
E.g non woven / woven mats for reinforcing banks or draining flat land

Do not rot
Deal well with water
Coet effective

Easily blocked by sediment / organic matter
Ineffective if damaged

Domestic textiles
Used domestically even if developed for other purposes
E.g cleaning wipes, furnishings, carpets, flooring
A: Hard wearing, stain resistant, absorbent
D: can be expensive, fire risk (for some), can be difficult to clean

Environmentally friendly textiles
Uses organically grown fibers such as hemp wool, cotton or bamboo or recycled materials
Examples - geotextiles, agrotextiles
A: processed with fewer chemicals and naturally resistant to mould and pests
D: can be expensive

Protective textiles
Provides protection against heat, harmful chemical gases pesticides and even bullets
E.g clothing for firefighter + molten metal protection for welders
Disposable chemical protection overalls
A: breathable and light (resistant to many external inputs)
D: expensive, not environmentally friendly

Sports textiles
Combine function with comfort for high performance
Emg running shoes, swimsuits, cycling shorts
A: can improve performance (removing moisture, lightweight, streamline, breathable, resist impact)
D: Expensive, not environmentally friendly
