Properties Of Materials Flashcards
Ductility
Ability of a metal to deform by bending / stretching / twisting
Malleability
Ability of a material to be permanently deforormed in all directions wothout it fracturing
Hardness
Ability of a material to resist deformation, indentation or penetration
Hard materials can abrasion, drilling, impact, scratching and generao wear and tear
Tensile strength
Amount of force and object can withstand when being pulled
Compressive strength
The amount of ‘crushing force’ an object can withstand
The denser a material the greater its compressive strength
Strength
Ability to withstand a force
Elasticity
Ability to return to an original shape once the deforming force is removed
Plasticity
Ability to be permanently deformed without breaking / fracture
Toughness
Ability to withstand sudden stress or shocks
Brittleness
Inability to withstand sudden stress / shocks
Durability
Ability to withstand deterioration over time
Stability
Ability to resist changes in shape over time
Stiffness
Ability to resist bending
Density
Compactness of a material (mass per volume)
Electrical / thermal conductivity
Ability to conduct electrical / thermal energy
