What is mild steel
Type of metal made from iron and carbon
It is tough, ductile, malleable,magnetic, high tensile strength (etc)
Poor corrosion resistance
Used in screws nails and bolts
What is stainless steel
It is a metal alloy of carbon steel, chromium nickel and manganese
It is corrosion resistant, hard, tough (sometimes magnetic)
Properties can be altered by varying the alloyed metals used
E.g cutlery and medical equipment
What is cast iron
Metal made from iron and carbon (higher % carbon than mild steel)
It is:
Brittle, good in compression,magnetic, has a hard skin + soft core
E.g machine parts, vices, brake discs
What is a ferrous metal
Metal containing a small amount of iron causing it to have magnetic properties
Some other metals or elements will provide other properties
What is a non-ferrous metal
A metal that does not contain iron, so it has a higher resistance to rust / corrosion.
They are not magnetic and tend to be more malleable than ferrous metals
What is aluminium
A greyish / white pure metal
Its is:
Malleable ductile easily machined, good conductor of heat and electricity, polished well
Used in
Aircraft, foil
Cans
What is copper
A reddy brow / orange metal
Corrosion resistant, ductile l, tough, easily machined - good conductor
Used for electrical wires, pipes, circuits and roofing
What is brass
Non-ferrous alloy of copper and zinc
Yellow colour
Corrosion resistant, easily machined, good conductor, harder than copper
Used for:
Plumbing fittings / door fittings
