Teams Q1 Flashcards
In order to successfully manage a project, the ability to lead a team is essential. Management writer and trainer John Adair’s work on leadership led to the identification of three specific sets of needs which must be satisfied when teams are managed; what are these needs and how are they inter-related?
a) The needs of an individual
b) The needs of the group/team
c) The needs of the task.
- For effective performance, all three needs must be identified and satisfied, otherwise the group will be unsuccessful.
- The total situation dictates the relative priority that must be given to each of the three sets of needs.
- Effective leadership involves identifying and acting on that priority as specific management roles, as can be seen in the diagram.

What did Adair Argue?
- Adair argued that the common perception of leadership as ‘decision-making’ was inadequate to describe the range of actions required by the complex situation in which a manager finds themselves.
- This model is therefore more practical as it clearly identifies the responsibility of the manager or leader in ensuring that the required task is achieved, but also that team individual needs are satisfied as part of the process,
