Describe Trait Theory
Sometimes referred to as the ‘great man’ theory, this theory argues that a leader emerge and are effective because they possess certain personality traits e.g. intelligence, self-confidence, maturity, decisiveness, extraversion. This is associated with Weber’s charismatic type of authority and people who are in leadership, because of their personality, are usually described as having certain charisma. Empirical studies however, indicate that there is little correlation between personality characteristics and being a leader.
Describe Style Theory
differs drastically from trait or skill theories. Instead of focusing on who leaders are, style theories considers what leaders do. At the core of all style theories is the idea that leaders engage in two distinct types of behaviour: task behaviours and relationship behaviours. How leaders combine these two behaviours determines their leadership effectiveness.
Describe Contingency Theory
of leadership focus on particular variables related to the environment that might determine which particular style of leadership is best suited for the situation. According to this theory, no leadership style is best in all situations. Success depends upon a number of variables, including the leadership style, qualities of the followers and aspects of the situation.
