What is teaching?
Process of influencing, empowering, providing experience to learn, providing info, helping someone understand info, and coaching for skills
Characteristics of great teachers?
Clear communication, empathy, adaptability, preparation, approachability, listen/observing skills, positivity, attitude
Benefits of teaching for pt/staff?
Pt- improves quality of life, ensures continuity of care, decreased anxiety, reduces incidence of illness complications, promotes adherence to treatment plans, maximizes independence, empower consumers to become involved in planning their care
Staff- improves therapeutic relationships, enhances job satisfaction, increases autonomy in practices, provides opportunity to create change that matter
What is relational practice?
Responsive approach to inquire into pt lived experiences/healthcare needs. Focuses on how personal/interpersonal/social structural factors that shape the pt’s experience
What are some problems of a “good” pt?
- Rely on medical expertise of nurses/doctors/HCP
- Pt may agree to treatments blindly without understanding because they trust the HCP or because of power imbalances
- Nurses rely too heavily on info dissemination method of pt education (especially new grad/students)
- Pt want to appear as though they’re being good/want to be liked by their nurse
Ethical responsibilities of nurses?
Empower pt to identify/express their values and care preferences, recognize their relationships in the family/community, assist pt in making informed choices
What is legal right/duties?
Rules and regulations that govern practice and are enforceable by law
What is an ethical dilemma?
Moral conflict where 2/more ethical principles apply with inconsistent courses of action
What is veracity?
Truth telling
What is nonmaleficence?
Principle of do no harm
What is negligence?
Any improper or wrongful conduct

Failure to document/communicate/assess and monitor/act as pt advocate/delegate tasks properly/follow standards of care/use equipment in responsible manner

Nurse collaborates with others to adjust priorities/minimizes harm. They keep person receiving in care informed about plans
What does promoting health/well being being involve?
Nurse work with pt to explore the healthcare choices available, nurses recognize SDOH in their assessments/when planning care, and nurses collaborate with others HCP
What does promote/respect informed decision making involve?
Share info to pt they need to have to make informed decisions, nurses don’t misuse their power, nurses provide education to support informed decision making, nurses promote pt participation in discussions/decisions
What does honouring dignity involve?
Maintain professional boundaries, nurses take into account their pt values/beliefs when planning care
What does maintaining privacy/confidentiality involve?
Safeguard personal/family/community information, prevent confidential information from being overheard
What does promoting justice involve?
Nurses make fair decisions about allocation of resources, nurses advocate for evidence informed decision make, nurses don’t discriminate based on race/culture/gender…
What does being accountable entail?
Nurses are responsible for their actions, nurses share their knowledge/provide feedback and mentorship and guidance
What are learners and teachers expected to be?
Learners- responsible to speak up regarding their learning experience, honest/trustworthy
Teachers- respectful/honest, reliable mentors and role models
What does good documentation entail and why is it important?
Health education is the least likely documented skill. Lack of documentation=negligence to perform professional duties. If something isn’t documented, then it didn’t happen
Health education and money?
Staff shortages/short hospital stays/lack of funding don’t support an environment where nurses can find more time to prioritize health education. When planning health education, assessment of cost (time, facilities, supplies) is important
