Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca. There demands were to get governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz to resign. The claimed he was corrupt when it came to spending and he had violent actions towards protestors
What tactics or forms of resistance did the protesters participating in APPO engage in?
March in solidarity, Sit ins, Took over the radio: For 6 months, APPO women took control of government buildings and radio stations and TV
What happened as a result of APPO controlling govt. buildings and radio and TV stations? Why was this significant?
Crime went down during those 6 months. It brought up the question that challenged the govt. (Ex: Taking over the treasury building bc funds were being misused). The movement demonstrated power and the success of the organization
In what ways was APPO movement based on indigenous modes of self-governance?
APPO used assemblies that were horizontal as opposed to vertical. Therefore, everyone had a voice. They held the community up and gave gifts to the greater good. Everyone was working towards helping each other.
How does the 2016 teacher’s movement, and the responses to it, compare to that of 2006?
In 2016, 4,500 federal troops attached the barricades. Teacher’s protest for the interest of the students. In comparison, there was violence, state police were shooting peaceful protestors. However, the 2006 protest was more massive. In 2016, he people have become numb to the shooting and it wasn’t as widespread and there was less of public outcry
