How did the favelas form?
Initially, soldiers were promised housing and they were never given this housing. So they relocated and decided to make life in the mountains.
What are common stereotypes associated with favelas? How do the perspectives we heard on the topic help us challenge these stereotypes?
Favelas: Isolated, denied state services like sanitation and waste pick-up. Don’t own the land, mainly minorities, poverty, lack of education and health clinics.
This was all challenged by tourism. They profit and educate people to change the stereotypes. Changing the way we refer to the favelas by not using the terms slums and ghettos.
How, when and why did informal housing begin to be seen (or constructed) as a problem? History of the term and of removal efforts.
When Brazil was trying to modernize, they wanted to get rid of the favelas because it didn’t fit their ideal perspective of Brazil. Favelas are illegal and there have been numerous waves trying to get residence to leave in 1937 and right before the 2016 olympics.
How did the Olympics (and other megaevents of the era) change the landscape of Rio de Janeiro? Was are the reactions to these changes?
Cost of renting and buying increased, Police Brutality, Forced Evictions, Built subway line and golf course, People were getting upset because they were being pushed out.
What version of Brazil was presented to tourist during the Olympics? What did this leave out?
Natural Abundance, The beach, Polished modern, stable and inclusive. Ironically, Brazil wanted to create an image of inclusion, but without taking care of the people they removed.
