Racial Democracy in Brazil Flashcards
Abides do Nascimento: Who was he? What did he argue? What was his contribution to Brazil?
He challenges this idea that “Brazil doesn’t see race” as a lie. Black never had rights. Black were the only ones to talk about race and when they did, they were called racist. There was this racial hierarchy that no one talked about for so long. Abolition was facade.
What did early 20th African American visitors observe about Brazil? How did visitors’ perspectives change over the course of the 20th century?
At first, visitors came and saw there was no segregation. They believe there was this harmony that existed. However, as these visitors stayed longer, the saw the segregation. These visitors were rejected from hotels, clubs, etc. They saw favelas were full of black people and there were disparities in education. Race was never talked about.
