Emperor Dom Pedro I, 1822
Unilateral Constitution (him by himself is declaring the new constitution). This new constitution recognized people’s rights, but maintained his authoritarian position. However, he got rid of assembly and made it all about himself.
Getulio Vargas and the Estado Novo: 1930-1945
Dictatorship. Pushed for his own constitution and took over the radio. He was similar to European fascism. Represented authoritarianism by taking charge, censors media to stay in control. He even appointed himself a second term.
Military Rule: 1964-85
This was a series of authoritarian governments. In these govt. Military was in control. They had legislation that claimed power and made laws. A lot of censorship. Passed laws to give themselves more power.
Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva
President from 2003-2011. He was part of Worker’s Party giving resources to the poor. Balsa Familiar- social welfare system for low income families. This reward system got kids to go to schools and visit health clinics. He was a huge hit from the pervious authoritarian govt Brazil has had. However, in 2005, he was associated in a corruption scandal (Mensal-buying votes; Car Wash-Over charged Oil Companies to fund their own party)
Dilma Rousseff
She was impeached this year from moving funds. She was tied to several scandals
