What does macho mean? What meanings do people associate with the term machoand machismo, and what do you conclude from the contradictions and variations in the meanings?

A

There’s a range of definitions of machismo. For older men, it is a pride/honor and a respect. However, for the younger generation, it is seen as dominance, aggression, violence, sexual assault, and control of women. Some stereotypes of macho: always angry, never crying, emotions are prohibited. However, these stereotypes kind of contradict what macho means for older men

A

Machismo started being seen through film and political leaders like Camacho. The rise of macho are national identity came during Camacho’s presidency during the 1940s

How do the characters in El Lugar Sin Limites (1978) display and challenge machismo and rules about what it means to be a man?

A

Don Alejo: Manipulative, Caretaker Role
Pancho: Gay, when he is kissed by Manuela, and has to redeem himself by killing her, being a player, coward
Manuela: Trans Gender
La Japonesa: Wants to own the space

Since Manuela is trans, he is suppose to act like a man, but he takes on mach traits. Not submissive. Don Alejo challenges it by being able to accept Manuela.
