TCM Illness - Midterm Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the Abdominal Pain - Cold Evil

A

Etiology:
Over eat cold and raw foods

Pathogenesis:
Cold slows down qi and blood movement causing pain. Cold can transform into damp and heat which can block the flow of Qi & Blood. MJ’s T&T can be caused by cold

Symptoms:
Abdominal cold colicky pain, bland taste, pain is worse with cold and improved with heat
T: pale, white greasy coating / P: deep, tight

Treatment Principle:
Dispel cold, warm interior, sooth Qi, stop pain

Q

Describe the Abdominal Pain - Damp Heat Obsruct

A

Etiology:
Sweet, greasy, rich foods
Summer heat invade the body

Pathogenesis:
Summer heat obstruct the SP or SP deficiency transform into damp and heat

Symptoms:
Abdomen burning distending pain, dislike pressure, greasy loose stools, constipation
T: red, yellow greasy coating / P: slippery, rapid

Q

Describe the Abdominal Pain - Food Retention

A

Etiology:
Improper diet

Pathogenesis:
Over eating damages the SP & ST’s ability to digest food properly, leading to stagnation

Symptoms:
Epigastric and abdominal distention and fullness, dislike pressure, acid regurgitation, relieved after pooing

Treatment Principle:
Purge stagnation, regulate qi, stop pain

Q

Describe the Abdominal Pain - LV Qi Stagnation

A

Etiology:
Stress, emotional triggers

Pathogenesis:
Emotional triggers constrain LV Qi. LV Qi stagnation affects SP & ST’s ability to digest, leading to qi stagnation

Symptoms:
Abdominal distention pain, moving in nature, pain radiates to lateral abdomen and hypochondriac region, pain is worse after emotional trigger and relived by sighing

T: red, thin white coat / P: wiry

Treatment Principle:
Soothe LV, regulate qi, stop pain

Q

Describe the Abdominal Pain - Blood Stasis

A

Etiology:
Emotional trigger, cold obstruction, traumatic injury

Pathogenesis:
Emotional triggers constrain LV Qi and Qi Stagnation chronically resulting to blood stasis. Cold obstruct the MJ slowing blood flow leading to blood stasis

Symptoms:
Abdomen sharp stabbing pain (fixed), worse at night and with pressure
Female: amenorrhea, profuse menstrual bleeding
T: dull purplish (thick SV) / P: thready, choppy

Treatment Principle:
Invigorate blood, resolve stasis, stop pain

Q

Describe the Abdominal Pain - Deficiency Cold

A

Etiology:
Bad diet, old age, congenital constitution, chronic illness

Pathogenesis;
Constitutional yang deficiency of SP results in internal cold which congeals and fails to warm the internal organs = long term chronic pain

Symptoms:
Qi Def Symptoms: SOB, weak voice, fatigue, lassitude, pale complexion
Abdomen dull ache
T: pale puffy with thin white or moist coat / P: deep, thready, weak

Treatment Principle:
Warm middle, tonify yang, relieve pain

Q

Describe the Epistaxis - Lung Heat

A

Etiology:
Exterior heat pathogen attack
Over eat hot natured foods

Pathogenesis:
LU opens to the nose. Heat in the blood pushes out of the blood vessels resulting into a nosebleed

Symptoms:
Dry nose with bleeding, dry mouth and throat, cough with scanty sputum

T: red / P: rapid

Treatment Principle:
Clear LU heat, cool blood, stop bleeding

Q

Describe the Epistaxis - Stomach Fire

A

Etiology:
Overeat hot natured foods

Pathogenesis:
Over consumption of hot natured foods generates fire in the Stomach. This fire ascends up to the yang ming meridian to the nose (LI 20)

Symptoms:
Gum and nose bleeding with bright red blood colour, dry mouth/nose/throat, constipation, irritable, dark scanty urine

T: red with yellow coat / P: rapid

Treatment Principle:
Clear ST, sedate fire, cool blood, stop bleeding

Q

Describe the Epistaxis - Yin Deficiency Fire

A

Etiology:
Overeat hot natured foods, over sexual activity, chronic illness, post febrile disease

Pathogenesis:
Deficiency of yin fluid unable to constrain yang. Deficiency fire ascends up to the yang ming meridian to the nose. Heat pushes out blood resulting in a nosebleed

Symptoms:
Nose bleed may be combined with gum bleeding; red or pale red blood, 5 center heat, bleeding is on and off chronically

T: red with scanty coating / P: rapid, thready

Treatment Principle
Nourish Yin, descend fire, clear collateral, stop bleeding

Q

Describe the Epistaxis - Liver Fire Ascend Up

A

Etiology: emotional

Pathogenesis:
Emotional triggers causes LV Qi stagnation chronically turning this into LV Fire which ascends up to the nose causing nose bleed

Symptoms:
Nose bleeding (bright red), dizziness, vertigo, headache, red eyes, blurry vision

T: red/crimson (esp edges) / P: wiry, rapid

Treatment Principle:
Sedate Liver, descend fire, cool blood, stop bleeding
