What is a Map?
A graphic representation of a portion of the Earth’s surface drawn to scale, as seen from above.

What is the purpose of a map?
To provide accurate information about the existence, location, and distance between ground features.
What are the major terrain features?
Hill, valley, ridge, saddle, depression.
What are the colors on a military map, and what do they represent?
Black–man-made features, buildings and roads.
Blue–water features
Green–Vegetation
Red–roads, cultural features
Brown–relief features, cultivated land
Red-brown–contour lines, cultural and relief features.
What are contour lines?
They show relief and elevation.

A horizontal angle measured clockwise from a north base line, used to express direction.

What are two methods for determining unknown map locations?
Intersection: location of an unknown point

What is the scale commonly used for a military city map?

Describe the flash to bang method for measuring distance.
Determines range to an explosion or enemy fire. Count the seconds between when you see the flash and hear the weapon. Each second is 330m to the target.
What symbol represents true north?

What are some methods of depicting relief?
Contour lines, form lines, relief shading, hachures, layer tinting
What is meant by the Military Grid Reference System?
Used as a geocode for the globe; point reference system derived from the UTM and UPS grid system
