TBI - Scales/level classifications Flashcards
Improve understanding of classifications
What is the Rancho Los Amigos Levels of Cognitive Functioning?
It is a scale from 1-8 that provides meaningful scale of response to stimuli for documenting cog/behavior status
Level 1:
No response
Level 2:
Generalized response. Inconsistent/ nonspecifically to various stimuli. Ie a light brushing stroke at arm may cause a painful reaction and abrupt movement of the ankle.
Level 3:
Localized response: Pt continues to respond inconsistently, but is SPECIFIC to the stimuli. Ie pt will respond to painful stimuli at hand with appropriate response to 1/3 attempts
Level 4:
Confused/agitated. Heightened state of activity. Behavior is bizarre/nonpurposeful. Recall/attention span is poor.
Level 5:
Confused/inappropriate: Pt responds to simple commands. Memory is impaired. Verbalization is inappropriate.
Level 6:
Confused/appropriate. Memory has improved. Pt relies on external stimuli
Level 7:
Automatic/appropriate. Performs automatically/appropriately in structured environment. Poor judgement.
Level 8:
Purposeful/appropriate. no perfectly, but acts appropriately. Responds moderately well in stressful/unusual circumstances.
Commonality of levels 4-6
Confused
Commonality of levels 7 & 8
Appropriate
Difference between 6 & 7
Confused-appropriate & Automatic-appropriate
Difference between 2 & 3
Generalized response & Localized response
Difference between 4-6
4 - confused/agitated
5 - confused/inappropriate
6 - confused/appropriate
GCS Severity Ranges?
13-15 – mild
9-12 – Moderate
