Stress Incontinence
sudden release of urine
Urge Incontinence
Bladder begins contracting and urine is released after sensation of bladder fullness is perceived
Overflow Incontinence
Bladder continuously leaks secondary to urinary retention or incomplete emptying of bladder
Functional Incontinence
Leakage associated with inability or unwillingness to use toilet
Cause of stress incontinence
Coughing, laughing, exercising, obesity, weak pelvic floor, postpartum, menopause, damage to pudendal nerve
Cause of urge incontinence
Detrusor muscle instability, hyperreflexia, stroke, sensory instability, hypersensitive bladder
Cause of overflow incontinence
Prostate enlargement, SCI, diabetes, neurogenic bladder, MS, suprasacral spinal lesions
Cause of functional incontinence
Dementia, depression, alzheimers, decreased function from stroke, environmental barriers
