General Vocabulary Flashcards
To improve recognition of general terminology
Agnosia
Inability to recognize familiar objects with one form of sensation
Akinesia
Inability to initiate movement. Parkinson’s Disease
Aphasia
Disturbance in language that results in errors in word choice, comprehension, syntax
Wernicke’s Aphasia
Receptive, fluent, and severe disturbances in auditory comprehension. Reading, writing and word recognition are impaired
Broca’s Aphasia
Expressive, non-fluent, and severe difficulty in verbal expression with impairment in object naming and writing ability. Rt hemiplegia is common
Apraxia
Inability to perform movements that were previously learned. This occurs without absence of strength, coordination, sensation, or comprehension
Astereognosis
Inability to recognize objects by TOUCH alone
Asynergia
inability to move muscles together in coordinated manner
Athetosis
Slow, involuntary, worm-like, twisting motions. Common with Cerebral Palsy
Causalgia
a painful, burning sensation. Common with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
Ideational Apraxia
Person no longer gets the “idea” of how to do a routine task (washing hands)
Ideomotor Apraxia
Person cannot do a task on command but can do it spontaneously
Chorea
Rapid, involuntary, jerky movements. Common with Huntington’s chorea.
Clonus
Rhythmic involuntary oscillation of muscle and joint in response to sudden stretch in patients with upper motoneuron disease. Typically at ankles, wrists, and/or jaw
Decerebrate Rigidity
Involuntary contraction of the extensor muscles of the upper and lower extremities because of an injury in the brainstem above the vestibular nucleus and below the red nucleus.
Decorticate Rigidity
Involuntary contraction of the flexor muscles of the UE and extension of the LE because of an injury in the brainstem above the red nucleus.
Delirium
temporary confusion
Dementia
Loss of memory or intellectual functioning. Common with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, infarctions, chronic alcoholism.
Dysdiadochokinesia
Impaired ability to perform rapid alternating movement. Associated with cerebellar disorders
Dysmetria
Inability to judge distances. Especially with cerebellar dysfunctions
Electromyography (EMG)
Used to assess alpha motor neuron integrity and provides analysis of resting and active contractions of muscles. Useful for diagnosis/prognosis of LMN injury/disease or myopathy
Herpes Zoster
Shingles. A painful inflammation of the posterior root ganglion caused by a virus. This leads to vesicles (fluid filled sacs) along the course of a dermatome
Horner’s Syndrome
Sx=ptosis, miosis, ipsilateral anhidrosis. Occurs secondary to damage to the sympathetic tract
Hypermetria/hypometria
Overshooting target/Undershooting target
Somatagnosia
lack of awareness of the relationship of one’s own body parts or body parts of others
Anosognosia
Denial, neglect, and lack of awareness of presence or severity of one’s paralysis
