TB 151 - Progressive Hose Lay and the Smokey Pack Lightweight Hose System Flashcards
There are two methods for deploying hose,
Simple and Progressive.
relies on a continuous line being advanced around the fire from the Engine to the nozzle with no junctions in between.
The Simple Hose Lay
The Simple Hose Lay has the advantage of minimal friction loss due to
minimal fittings
Simple hose lays uses what length of double jacketed hose
1” or 1 1/2”
is a hose lay that starts from the supply source and progresses along the perimeter of the fire.
Progressive Hose Lay
Progressive hose lay uses a continuous application of water while extending the lay and allows for a series of lateral junctions at ______ intervals
100’ intervals
Progressive hose lay
uses a continuous application of water while extending the lay and allows for a series of lateral junctions at
Trunk line
Progressive hose lay.
The trunk line will be a minimum size of
1 1/2”
Progressive Hose lay:
Each junction will have a 1” line with a 1” (_____ _______ _______) nozzle attached and be connected to a 1½” ______ _____ through a __” to _” reducer, referred to as a lateral.
10/40 dual gallon age nozzle
Gated wye
1 1/2 to 1”
The Progressive Hose Lay has several advantages over the Simple Hose Lay. First, it provides for a _______ ______ on a fire without being forced to shut down the hose to progress up the flanks.
Continuous attack
The Progressive Hose Lay has several advantages over the Simple Hose Lay.
Also, it is safer for the _______ ________ ____method as it provides a larger safety margin, having charged 1” lateral lines left in place for the event of a flare up along the line.
Direct attack method
Only the_______ attack line is advanced charged, increasing deployment speed and decreasing work load
1””
The disadvantage of the Progressive Hose Lay is the higher friction loss due to the increased number of fittings (approximately______– ____psi each).

It is the Policy of the LAFD that when using a Progressive Hose Lay to provide for perimeter control, companies shall utilize a minimum of __” hose line for the trunk line and a __” hose line for the attack and laterals lines.
1 1/2”

Each drop of a Progressive Hose Lay shall consist of the following:
_____’ 1½” Single Jacket Hose (Minimum size for the trunk line)
•________ Single Jacket Hose (Attack and lateral line)
•______Gated Wye with
____ 1½” to 1” Reducer
•1” Nozzle (10/40 Dual Gallonage)
•____ Rubber Bands or ladder straps to secure gates.

A Company given the task of establishing a progressive hose lay is expected to, at a minimum, be able to put in ______ ____
3 drops
is a pre-assembled pack of single jacket lightweight hose, which allows rapid deployment of packs and extension of line with an uninterrupted supply of water.
Smokey Pack Lightweight Hose System
Smokey Pack Lightweight Hose System. This hose is polyester single jacketed construction with a ______lining, cut to __’ lengths with attached couplings of National Standard threads on both 1” and 1½” hose.
Polyurethane

Starter roll
26 lbs
In addition to the four complete Smokey Packs and one Starter Kit, each Company will also receive one compliment of hose consisting of ___’ of 1” lightweight hose and ___’ of 1½” lightweight hose.

SMOKEY PACK ASSEMBLY
- Lie out 100’ section of 1” hose and fold in half, with the male on top, placed ___behind female coupling.
24”
SMOKEY PACK ASSEMBLY
- Roll tightly, 100’ section of 1½” hose with _____coupling forming the core.
Female
SMOKEY PACK ASSEMBLY
Continue to feed the hose into the backpack, tightly flaking it in a zigzag fashion. While loading, secure the hose every __’-__’ until the 1” line is completely loaded.
