Taste And Smell Flashcards

1
Q

Where are primary olfactory sensory neurons located?

A

Primary olfactory sensory neurons live in the olfactory epithelium in the roof of the nasal cavity beneath the cribiform plate of the ethmoid bone. Their axons penetrate the plate and project to the olfactory bulb.

Q

Where do olfactory sensory neurons project?

A

Olfactory sensory neurons project to mitral and tufted cells in the glomeruli of the olfactory bulbs. These project down the olfactory tract to the brain. Periglomerular cells and granule cells are GABAergic and provide lateral inhibition just like amacrine and horizontal cells.
