Q

What is the auditory pathway?

A

Afferent projections arrive through the auditory (cochlear) branch of CNVIII. They terminate on the cochlear nuclei. Cochlear neurons project to the superior olive, both ipsi- and contralaterally, which detects the location of sound.

Superior olive neurons project to the inferior colliculus. The IC is involved in co- ordinating motor reflexes in response to sounds.

SO neurons project to the inferior colliculus. Collicular neurons project to the medial geniculate complex of the thalamus. Finally, thalamic neurons project to the primary auditory cortex (A1).

Q

What does the vestibular apparatus consist of?

A

The semi-circular canals account for the three dimensions of space
and at the base of each is an ampulla containing sensory hair cells. They function to detect rotational movement of the head and head position.
