Task Analysis & Chaining Flashcards
Behavior Chain
A complex behavior consisting of many component behaviors that occur in a sequence
-to reinforce a behavior chain, reinforcement given at the end of the sequence of behavior
Chaining
The use of prompting strategies to train component behaviors in a chain and then link them together
How to teach complex behavior:
1) Task analysis
2) Identify Terminal reinforcer
3) Choose appropriate chaining strategy
Task Analysis ✅✅✅✅
Process of breaking down complex behaviors into smaller, teachable units
-specifies both the component behaviors + sequence
Example) behavior chain for handwashing
Terminal Reinforcer
Terminal reinforcer is the reinforcer the client gets once they complete the chain/link.
Natural reinforcer: eating
Contrived reinforcer: iPad
The 3 chaining strategies:
1) Forward chaining
2) Backward chaining
3) Total task presentation
Forward Chaining ⛓️⬇️
Component behaviors are taught in sequence beginning with the 1st link
-teach ONE link at a time using prompting + reinforcement
-when link is acquired, begin teaching next
-only ONE step at a time
-once client can do step independently, next step targeted
Backward Chaining ⛓️⬆️
Links are taught in sequence beginning with the LAST link and progressing BACKWARDS through the task analysis
-tasks must be done independently to move to next targeted step
- reinforcer given until End of behavior chain
-initial steps not required or physical prompting/RBT completed for client
Total Task Presentation 🏆🥇
Client progresses through ALL steps of the chain EACH TIME during each training opportunity
-least necessary prompt lvl provided at each step (graduated guidance)
[more assistance if client struggles; less if sign of progress/independence]
-as client learns each link, prompts are faded
-client completes FULL sequence == reinforcer
