Behavior & Environment Flashcards
Behavior Analysis
Natural science of behavior
Behavior
Any activity of a living organism
[dead-man test]
Operant Behavior
Voluntary behavior
All behavior controlled by its consequences (behavior influenced by the outcomes it produces)
Involuntary Behavior (respondent behavior)
All behavior that is reflexive/automatic
(Not learned through consequences)
Overt Behavior
(Public events)
Behavior observable to another individual
(Cooking, reading, playing,
Covert behavior [ private events]
Activities only observable to the individual doing these activities (thinking, planning, memorizing a list)
Response
An instance of behavior
Topography
The shape/form of the response
Example) several topographies for drinking water
Operant Class (behavior analysis)
The set of responses that result in the same consequence
Operant class = asking for help in a math problem
Response 1 = HELP!!!
Response 2 = shrugs
Response 3 = I can’t :/
Response 4 = help sign 🪧
GETS HELP FROM ALL OF THESE
Contingency
A causal relation
X -> Y
If x, then y
Three-Term Contingency
The functional relationship among the Antecedent, behavior, and consequence (ABC)
Antecedent -> Behavior -> Consequence
\ / Environment
Direct observation
Methods for objectively observing & measuring behavior
Self-Report observations
Observer relies on an individual’s memory of the behavior
