Pepper’ a 20kg Labrador has fractured her pelvis and is unable to walk. The veterinary nurse has placed a Foley urinary catheter and attached a closed collection system. The system was last emptied 4 hours ago.

  • Empty the closed collection system and carry out a gross examination
  • Calculate and compare the amount of urine produced against the expected output over 4 hours.

A

Wear gloves and apron
Check urinary catheter is in place and the closed collection system is in tact (verbalise that catheter is in place and there are no leaks)
Empty the urine into the measuring jug and ensure bag is kept below patient

Then

A

Carry out gross examination
Comment of turbidity(cloudy or clear)/colour(brown or yellow)/ smell
Remember the amount of urine there is
Use the litter tray and put the paper towel in there. Pour urine over it to allow it to slack up the urine and dispose of in clinical waste along with gown and gloves

Lastly

A
Record urine output on hospital chart (e.g. 200ml over 4 hours)
Calculate expected volume of urine 
1-2ml/kg/hr
1x20 = 20ml
2x20 = 40 ml
20-40ml/hr

4x20 = 80ml/4hrs
4x40 = 160ml/4hrs
80-160ml is the example red volume over 4 hours
state whether actual volume of urine is within these parameters. i.e. produced much less irons than expected
