Task 1 - Ear Bandage Flashcards
Scenario: A 20kg Labrador has been brought into the surgery after being attacked in the local park. She has been bitten on the RIGHT ear
- Aseptically apply a appropriate wound dressing
- Apply an appropriate bandage to the ear
First……
Select appropriate materials
- adhesive wound dressing (do not pick it up unless you are absolutely ready to put it on the wound)
- padding (cotton wool)
- synthetic padding
- conforming (k bandage)
- cohesive bandage (protective outer layer)
- scissors
- gloves (put on first so you don’t forget)
2nd step
Ask assistant to restrain the patient
- depending on ear (right) hold left side of body towards you and an arm gently around the neck to hold her steady and keep her calm
3rd step
Apply adhesive wound bandage to the wound (shiny side up)
Apply cotton wool to top of head and lay the ear onto and add another layer on top
Hold in place and use synthetic padding, starting from the neck (keeping it light layer) and going all the way up. When reach ear go over and in front of (or behind) the ear and coming back around making sure to cover the cotton wool and switch to go behind the ear. The in front and behind (8) continue until full covered ear and other still out. Do not cover eyes or make it tight
4th step
Apply same figure 8 rules to the conforming later starting and the neck. This the layer which will become firm so check tension as you go along.
Once done you then add the last layer and make sure you use scissors to cut the bandage if finished. Last layer should not apply any extra pressure.
5th step
Once finished, state you are checking the tension to ensure the airway is not restricted. Make sure to mark the cover ear with a pen and that no padding is exposed. Handle patient gently throughout
