A 30kg labradoodle has eaten a blue block that is suspected of being poison. The client had brought her dog into the surgery as an emergency
- triage the patient
- apply basic first aid

Greet the client
Hi my name is Isabell, I’m a student vet nurse that’s going to perform the initial assessment on your dog
Initial assessment
Wear gloves
Check ABC
Airway - look into mouth making sure to maintain personal safety, check to see if airway is clear
Breathing - establish visual inspiration and expiration
Circulation - Listen to heart and peripheral pulse at the same time. State no deficits
Assess neurological state - use pen light to check piped all reflex. State that they are equal and reactive to light
Record all this down
Obtain capsule history
Can I get your name and your pets name What happened? When did it happen? Any medical conditions we need to aware of? Any medication he’s on at the moment? What for and when was the last dose. Write all this down
Next
Perform whole body examination
Nose to tail. State you are checking for wounds, blood and any obvious fractures
Write down that there are no external wounds that could be found
Afterwards
Remove gloves and ask the client to take a seat while you inform the vet of your findings
