• collectivization of farms not successful:
– resistance from farmers – government had to use force (villagization)
– no money invested in the villages (overcrowded and unproductive land)
– agricultural production dropped which led to shortages therefore fwer goods to export – increasingly reliant on foreign aid by 1980s
Tanzania unable to achieve self-reliance – forced to borrow money from IMF by 1986 had to agree to conitions of the IMF– mismanagement to beurcarcy
-Government set up 300 cooperation’s( bank, industries) which were overstaffed and inefficient
