what was the TRCs underlying purpose
was to uncover the truth about what happened during and in this was make everyone aware for the past so they could start the processes of reconciliation
List the Aims of the TRC
1- to investigate the causes and extent of human rights violations under apartheid
2- recommended compensation to victims
3-to grant amnesty to perpetrators under certain conditions that they give a full public testimony of their actions
what was the form of justice used by the TRC
Restorative justice which means healing where there was an emphasis on forgiveness and reconciliation
What were the three separate committees of the TRC
1- Committee on Human -rights violations
2-Committee on Reparations and rehabilitation
3-Committee on amnesty
What did the committee on human rights violations do
1- people come to tell their stories
2- they were public testimonies and had national coverage
3- it helped south Africans about the atrocities that took place in the past

2- gave victims support where possible
3- some cases where given reparations for their and suffering
Committee of Amnesty
1- grant amnesty from prosecution to perpetrators of political violence
2- perpetrators had to prove that their crimes were done for political motive not fir personal gain or malice
3- perpetrators had to tell the whole truth and acknowledge what they had done
How did the TRC ensure processes were fair
They dealt with both side of politics( national party and liberals)
What did the TRC bring to light
the public testimonies pf those who fought for and against the apartheid government revealed how much violence was carried out it shed light on published events such as the Bisho massacre and ordinary south Africans caught up in the violence
What did the TRC conclude
In Oct 1998 the trc presented to Nelson Mandela that:
the national party under pw Botha was responsible for toture, arson, abduction, sabotage
Critised fw de klerk for the 3rd force that disrupted the negations
Critised those who fought against apartheid for the violence they insisted: toture and excutions taken place at Anc training camps
attacks by APLA guerillas forces that caused civilian causalities
necklace executions that supports of the UDF carried out (1980s)
What were the different criticism people had toward the trc
Mbeki- insisted was wrong to judge the violence of those who fought against apartheid in the same way used to judge the police and state operatives
De Klerk- accused the trc for seeking revenge rather than reconciliation
Buthelezi- said the trc favored the ANCs version of events over Inkhata s

Did the TRC achieve reconciliation
no because Archbishop desmond tutu argued although truth might not led to reconciliations there could be no genuine reconciliation unless there was truth . reconciliation was hard to achieve but the rec bought much to light which ensured the past could not be forgotten, the TRC did not achieve reconciliations but it was the start
