Demonstrate ways to tailor early language exposure to children across various acuity levels, developmental levels, ages, and settings
Narrate:
*Describe what you are doing.
*What do you hear?
*What do you see?
*Talk with your patient.
Parentese:
*Uses actual words and sentences.
*Emphasize parts of speech
*Elongate words
*Expressive face
*Sing song tone.
*Fluctuate pitch.
*Depending on acuity and setting may be a whisper tone.
Serve and Return:
*Back and forth conversation
*Use home language.
*Look for positive nonverbal cues (smiles, giggles, eye contact)
*Look for stress cues (Arching back, rigidity, floppy, changes in baseline vitals)
Identify the link between early language exposure and improved educational and health outcomes
The more interactions the brain has, the more improved educational and health outcomes. Child can read at third grade, graduate high school, and better health outcomes.

Review the concept of “I Do, We Do, You Do” and ways to foster parent involvement in early language interactions.

Direct questions and comments to the baby “Hi baby, how are you?”
Demonstrate the skills of narrate your day. serve and return, and parentese.
