Why is Tane to blame for the permanence of death?

A

Tane, a demigod formed the female element = Hine. He fashioned her from the earth and then married her.
The had two daughters, the youngest being Hine-titama.
Tane has relations with his daughter, and shame causes her to flee to the darkness, becoming Hine-nui-te-po, the Goddess of death, and with this death becomes permanent.

Q

Where would you find the body during Takiaue?

A

Some Marae have whare mate, a building for the dead which separates the living and the dead, but most of the time the body will be placed on the porch, inside on a stage or inside on the floor.
If the body is inside the whare nui then it will be either at the far end or immediately to the right.

Q

What’s the Nehu? What happens during the Nehu?

A

The Nehu is the burial.
Before this starts, usually early in the morning, there is the closing of the coffin. This is a really important process of getting loved ones to start letting them go.
Usually at around 11am there will be a service/karakia at marae/home/church.
The body is then carried in a procession to the urupā.

17
Q

What happens after the burial? (4 things)

A
  1. The kirimate return to the marae and the hākari takes place; if they have been fasting this will be the first time that they have eaten.
  2. The Takahi Whare happens; the process of whakanoa (removing tapu from where the body had been resting).
  3. Hura kōhatu:
    Unveiling of the headstone.
  4. Kawe Mate: Mourning ceremony at another marae, at a community’s request.
