A communal space: They used to be inhabited but now more like a venue.
A cultural bastion for practising ritual, reaffirming identity and belonging, and reaffirming values and concepts.
What is the courtyard used for?
Powhiri, public speaking, fighting, public debating, public forum.
What’s the whare nui?
‘large house’; meeting house, main dwelling, central building.
