Piki, Heke; Opportunity and Disappointment 1840 - 1863 Flashcards
So what was life like for Maori in 1840?
- There were lots of tribal groups
- Iwi were not the political authorities, it was the hapu
- These hapu lived amongst each other and adjacent to each other and were often tied by marriage.
- Musket wars and migrations had disrupted tribal unity.
- Maori population was much larger than European population
What potential opportunities did Maori see?
1846 - 1856 was a period of entrepreneurial activity for Maori.
Pakeha needed food and there were exportation opportunities (food to the gold fields in Australia).
Maori wanted to survive and compete in the modern world, they were growing crops, buying ships and flour mills.
What caused the 1840s warfare?
Mana and land.
The vision that Maori and Pakeha had for the future could not coexist. For mana Kawanatanga to increase…
… mana Maori had to decrease.
What were the four armed conflicts between Pakeha and Maori in the 1840s?
- 1843: Wairau, cause = land; a group of settlers claiming land and trying to arrest Te Rauparaha.
- 1845 & 46: Northern War, cause = Mana; Hone Heke chopping down the flag pole 4 times because government actions had trampled on mana. Waka Nene brought about peace.
- 1846: Hutt Valley, cause = land
- 1847: Whanganui, cause = Mana

What were the two major conflicts in the 1860s?
- 1st Taranaki War 1860 - 1861
- Cold War 1861 - 1863; essentially the Taranaki war restarted because Governor Grey did not return the Waitara block to Maori; he also isolated Kingitanga and built up military power.
